Disney leads companies announcing layoffs; big airline job cuts loom

In the following post, you will read my opinion about the article ‘Disney leads companies announcing layoffs; big airline job cuts loom’. The topic / my opinion is, that the big companies aren’t doing their best to save jobs. The post contains what I think about it, how I look at it, what I think the big companies should have done better, and so on. The text is divided into 4 parts: ‘67% of the people who works for Disney and who got lay-off, worked part-time’, ‘The company ‘Dow’ will reduce its global workforce costs by approximately 6%.’, ‘Airlines are clamoring for additional aid from lawmakers to preserve jobs through March 31, but there isn’t yet a deal..’. The last part contains a counter reason.

67% of the people who works for Disney and who got lay-off, worked part-time

Disney has said it will lay off 28,000 employees across its parks, experiences and consumer products divisions. According to a statement, 67% of the laid-off workers were part time. My opinion is that Disney should have keep the part-time workers and should have changed the full-time workers to part-time workers. In this way, both the part-time workers and full-time workers have an income. I find this undoubtedly not a good move from Disney.

The company ‘Dow’ will reduce its global workforce costs by approximately 6%

Secondly, the company ‘Dow’ will reduce its global workforce costs by approximately 6%. All though they didn’t mentioned how many people they would fire, they also don’t think about talking to their staff about voluntary buy-outs and leaves of absence. In my opinion, that’s just selfish. The least they could do is talk to their staff and ask their opinion about it. For example, some airlines did this, and a lot of employees volunteered to do this and that have helped reducing their costs.

Airlines are clamoring for additional aid from lawmakers to preserve jobs through March 31, but there isn’t yet a deal..

Thirdly, the airline industry has also been among the hardest hit. For example, U.S. airlines are on the verge of shedding more than 30,000 jobs. A lot of airlines are clamoring for aid from lawmakers to preserve jobs until March 31. Despite this proposal has won bipartisan support in Congress and from the Trump administration, there is still no deal. I find that the government should help the companies a little bit with reducing their costs and exceptions related to their taxes. As a result, a lot of jobs will be safe until March 31.

On the other hand…

Although it’s not fair for the people who work at these companies, it’s also hard for the companies because they have a lot of costs and of course the costs of personnel is the biggest one. They needed to stop producing and stop selling because of the Coronavirus. They have stopped working, but the costs didn’t stop coming. But of course, as I’ve said before, these companies should have talked with their staff about voluntary buy-outs before laying-off their staff to reduce their costs.

In conclusion

So, to summarize, I find that these companies aren’t doing enough to save the jobs of their personnel. As said before, they should have talked first to their staff, like some airlines, about voluntary buy-outs and leaves of absence. In the airlines industry, a lot of people volunteered to do this, and that have helped reducing their costs. I find also that Disney should have changed their full-time workers to part-time workers instead of laying their part-time workers off. In that way, people who work part-time still have an income. The people who work full-time also still have an income, but it’s just not as much they were used to. I think that was the best solution. I also think the government should have done more. But that’s my opinion. I would like to hear yours about this, so leave it in the comments below!
