Microsoft makes remote work option permanent

I truly believe that it’s not a good idea to make the option ‘work from home’ permanent.

First, I think it’s difficult to separate the line between work and private when you work at home. People get a lot more distracted whenever they work at home and not at the office. They’re more likely to do the household for example. It also feels for them like they are sleeping at work, which makes it also harder to stay focussed and deliver good work.

Secondly, some jobs, who for instant need access to the hardware, can’t work from home. It’s difficult for them. It’s also more difficult to host meetings at home. Some people don’t have the right equipment for example to practise their job.

Finally, it’s just important to also work at the office for meetings, building company culture and for the peoples mental health. If they work at home permanent, they don’t get to see their colleagues anymore. This is for instance not good for the peoples mental health. As said before, people who work from home get the feeling like their sleeping at work, so it’s difficult to really exit ‘work’ and go home and relax.

So, what I’m saying is that it’s not a good idea making the option ‘work from home’ permanent. It’s difficult to separate the line between work life and private life. People also don’t always own the right equipment to work from home, which makes it also harder. I just find it not a good idea because it’s also important to work at the office too for physical contact. I think it’s just not good for people’s mental health because it’s difficult to exit ‘work’ and go home.
